At the heart of Fairview, where the needs of families are great and resources are few, the Franciscan Community Development Center of Fairview (FCDC) has become a place of hope, healing, and dignity. This mission is lovingly led by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, who, inspired by the humble compassion of Saint Francis of Assisi, open their doors each day to serve neighbors with love, not judgment.
Every month, the Center’s Choice Food Pantry touches the lives of nearly 6,000 individuals and more than 800 families. Parents who worry about how to feed their children, seniors living alone on fixed incomes, and workers struggling to make ends meet all find not only groceries but also the dignity of choice, kindness, and a warm smile. The pantry is more than shelves of food—it is a lifeline of nourishment, hot meals and compassion.
But the Center’s mission goes far beyond food. The Counseling Program provides emotional and mental health support for those carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. In moments of grief, anxiety, or uncertainty, neighbors discover a listening ear, compassionate guidance, and the strength to begin again.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) VITA Program brings financial literacy and empowerment, offering free tax preparation that returns thousands of dollars back to struggling households through IRS refunds. For families who live paycheck to paycheck, this is not simply money—it is relief, stability, and the chance to breathe a little easier.
Our Legal Service Program stands as an advocate for seniors in need, protecting their rights, guiding them through complicated systems, and ensuring they are never left to face challenges alone. In the spirit of Franciscan justice, it gives voice to those who are too often unheard.
And still, the mission extends even further—into the celebrations and traditions that restore dignity, joy, and belonging. Children receive backpacks filled with supplies so they can return Back-to- School with confidence. Mothers are honored with small gifts on Mother’s Day. Families gather in gratitude at Thanksgiving with food for their tables. At Christmas, children’s eyes light up with toys, and at Easter, the spirit of renewal is shared in rejoicing. Through every season, the Center ensures that no one is forgotten in life’s milestones and sacred moments.
None of this is possible without the hands and hearts of our -community partners—schools, supermarkets, municipal officials, and countless volunteers—who come together to prepare for the needs of the most marginalized in our community: women, children, and seniors.
All of these programs, rooted in the love of the Sacred Heart and the enduring example of Saint Francis, weave together a safety net of compassion. They remind us that every person deserves dignity, every family deserves hope, and every neighbor deserves to know they are not forgotten.
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
— Saint Francis of Assisi
